Well done also to Éva Kelly, Aoife Murray and Grace Sweeney who competed for Leinster in the Irish Interprovincial Championships in Lisburn yesterday (Fintan Meagher was also selected, but was unable to compete).

25 July - Irish Age Groups, Youth and Open Championships

The club had a good representation at the two major end-of-season  national galas held in July – first the Irish Age Groups covering up to under 15 age group for boys, and under 14 for girls. The club was represented by Izzie Banks, Diarmait Bradley O’Connor, Cian Cunningham, Megan Duffy, Santiago Parga, Eileen Scanlon and Scott Ringland. We then had the Irish Youths (girls under 15, 16, boys 17-18) and Open Championships. Our representation was Eva Banks, Michael Carroll, Cian Cunningham, Lucy Gaynor, Éva Kelly, Fintan Meagher, Aoife Murray, Catalina Parga and Grace Sweeney. Both galas were very competitive, with the Open Championships attended by clubs and regional squads from South Africa, Egypt, France and Scotland.

We had some excellent results, particularly in the freestyle events. In the Open girls 400m event, Grace Sweeney took gold, with Éva Kelly barely missing out on silver (Aoife Murray took fifth in the same final).

In the 100m Free in the Men’s 17-18 Age Group, Fintan Meagher had a terrific time of 53.42 lowering yet again his club Junior record, but was pipped for the gold medal.

In the 400m IM Open final, Aoife Murray came from a long way behind over the last 50m to take bronze (and almost snatched silver).

24 May - newsletter published
The most recent newsletter, covering January to April 2010 and recently issued to swimmers in hard copy, has now been published online.       Issue 43
3 May - Well done to our swimmers at Long Course Nationals
Very well done to all of our swimmers at the Irish Long Course Championships over the weekend. This was a great weekend, with a 50 strong USA junior squad competing and a number of world-class UK swimmers, including Hannah Miley. IM specialist. We had a number of swimmers who reached A and B finals, and achieved some great PB's.

Participants were Eva Banks, Kate Coleman-Lenehan, Rosanna Cooney, Niamh Duggan, Lucy Gaynor, Eva Kelly, Aoife Murray, Ciara Murray, Grace Sweeney, Cian Cunningham and Fintan Meagher.

Special congratulations to Aoife Murray who took a silver medal in the 1,500 metres Freestyle. Other noteworthy performances came from Fintan Meagher, Éva Kelly and Grace Sweeney.

The Championships received great coverage in the US swimming websites. This includes videos of all finals (A and B) with US commentaries - Glen-bay-lin features prominently. See www.swimmingworld.tv/2010-irish-nationals

25 April - Irish Long Course Nationals
Very best of luck to the Senior squad next weekend at the NAC for the biggest event of the season so far - the Irish Long Course Nationals. Word has it that this event will be attended by the US Junior squad - so there will be top class action for anybody interested in attending.
25 April - some belated updates
After some technical hitches, we are back on line and have updated the pool-sitting roster page with the April roster (to be very shortly replaced of course with that for May). Also I have finally uploaded the September-December newsletter (again, we expect to have a new one shortly). Apologies for the delays.
3 January - Club gala results
Thanks to all who made the club gala a success. There was a great crowd in attendance in spite of the time of year and a clash with the Leinster Senior Schools gala (which had been rearranged at short notice). The full results are available here
6 September - good article for parents
We have set up an "information" page on the site and are working on some inputs. For a start, we have uploaded a link to a very good article appearing in Swimmingworldmagazine.com - with some useful guidance for swimming parents (thanks, Paula).                                                                          information
30 August - website updates
Welcome back to all squads.

Photos from all recent galas (including the big end-of-season galas) have now been published. The Summer newsletter is also available, as is the September pool-sitting roster.

There is some tidying up to be done, including setting up a new calendar for the year. We will try to get this done over the next couple of weeks.

8 August - Update for new season
After the usual short Summer break, training starts back for the Senior squad on 25 August (mornings only). Piranhas start back on 30 August. Torpedoes, Dolphins and Minnows re-commence on 8 September.

8 August - Well done to all at Nationals
The club had a very successful end of season with two big galas in July - first the Irish Age groups and then the Irish open and Youths Championships. We had some terrific results including yet another Irish relay record from the senior girls squad in winning the 4 X 200m freestyle event (Rosanna Cooney, Niamh Duggan, Chloe Meehan, Grace Sweeney). Our other gold medal winners and Irish champions were Aoife Murray (under 16 400m IM) and Fintan Meagher (17-18 200m IM). There were quite a few other medal winners and finalists. There will be fuller report in the Summer newsletter which will be posted to all members later in the month.

I expect the galleries page will be updated with all recent galas etc over the next few days. Sorry for the delay in getting this sorted out - Noel
1 April - Glenalbyn girls break Irish Senior Record!!!
Well done to all Senior squad swimmers who participated in the very competitive David McCullough gala in Limerick over last weekend. Results generally were very good with medallists, finalists and lots of long-course PB's.

Pride of place however goes to the senior girls relay team:

 - Kate Coleman Lenehan

 - Rosanna Cooney

 - Niamh Duggan

 - Grace Sweeney

who broke the long-standing Irish Senior Freestyle 4 * 50m long-course record in an incredible time of 1:52.5. They also narrowly missed out on the Medley record (by some 0.4 seconds).

Well done to the relay girls for this fantastic achievement for the club, to all members of the squad for a very successful gala weekend and to coach Linda who of course played a major part.

23 December - Club gala
Well done to all participants in the Club gala yesterday. Attendance was excellent, considering how busy everybody is at this time of year. There was also a great crowd at the presentation and social evening - many thanks to all who helped on the night.

We will publish the full results of the gala on the website over the next few weeks.

1 November - well done - Irish Relay Champions
Well done to the members of the Senior Squad participating in the Irish Short Course Nationals in Lisburn. There have been some excellent results, with many finalists and medallists. Pride of place goes to the Girls 4*200m freestyle relay team which won gold (pretty comfortably) from the City of Belfast team last night. The team in swimming order was Niamh Duggan, Rosanna Cooney, Chloe Meehan and Grace Sweeney. It is a measure of the great strength in depth the club has among it's girl swimmers that there were three or four other squad members who could count themselves unlucky not to have made this team. Well done again to all squad members and to coach Linda.
28 September - First draft calendar for new season published
We have published the first draft of the calendar for the new season. This primarily features the galas that the Senior squad will attend. Over the next few weeks, we will update for the other squads also.

5 May - Irish Long-course Championships - Grace does a 59
Well done to all club swimmers at the Irish Long Course Championships at the NAC this weekend. This is the biggest gala of the season so far and, as an Olympics Qualifying Event has attracted competitors from a number of other countries.

A real highlight for the club was Grace Sweeney's performance in going sub one minute for the 100m Freestyle long course. We believe this is the first time it has been achieved by a female club swimmer.

Grace put a sequence of freestyle performances together that put her just outside the medals in all of the events (50m, 100m, 200, 400m, 800m) against very stiff competition. Her 200m Freestyle time of 2:08.4 put her just 0.5 seconds outside the 2012 squad qualifying time.

Similarly, Rosanna Cooney had some fantastic back crawl times - her 2:23.8 time in the 200m event  final was just 0.3 seconds outside the 2012 squad time.

Congratulations to the two girls relay teams. The 4*100m team (Rosanna Cooney, Niamh Duggan, Jane McLoughlin, Grace Sweeney) came 3rd, and the 4*200m team (Rosanna Cooney, Niamh Duggan, Ciara Murray, Grace Sweeney) came fifth, just 2 seconds outside a medal position.

Congratulations to all club swimmers who competed with great heart and achieved many PBs.

27 April - Seniors bag-packing
The Senior squad had a very successful bag-packing day yesterday in Mount Merrion - they collected  €1,300 towards the cost of their training trip to Spain in June. Well done to Club Captains, Grace Sweeney and Kevin Smyth for organising this.

17 July - great club performances at Division 1
The Irish Age Groups Division 1 gala was held in Limerick at the weekend. For the first time, the event was held as a 50m gala, and there were a significant number of entries with representation not just from clubs across the 32 counties, but there were also six or seven strong clubs from England and Wales in attendance.

In spite of this, the club had its most successful Irish Age Groups ever with lots of PB's, finalists and as many as seventeen medals.

Pride of place went to the under 14 girls relay team who won the 200m Freestyle relay event against a particularly competitive field. Pushed hard by Kilkenny and Trojan in the final, the girls went below the elusive two minute barrier - a great achievement in a long course event. The winning team, in swimming order, was Meabh MacConville, Jane McLoughlin, Niamh Duggan and Rosanna Cooney - and spare a thought for Ciara Duffy who was pipped by the narrowest of margins for a place on the team.

Medal winners were:

Well done to all of the competitors in the annual lengths class gala which was held this morning. There were some very exciting races, and there was a great crowd in attendance.

Many thanks to all who helped ensure it ran smoothly, in particular Kieron McGovern, Caroline Duffy, Betty Benson, Judith Lloyd and all of the teachers who put great work in with the swimmers to ensure they were well prepared for the day.

Thanks also to the parents who volunteered for time-keeping and other duties.                                                                                                      results

7 April - Cork Dolphins gala
Well done to all of our swimmers at the Dolphin Minnows (under 12) gala in Cork last weekend, and to coaches Janet and Aoife. We had in excess of 30 swimmers competing, our largest representation ever. By all accounts, it was a very enjoyable weekend for both kids and adults, and a very successful one in the pool. Thanks to Janet for the attached listing of all of our finalists. Dolphin gala finalists
7 April - All results updated
The calendar page has now been updated with the results of all galas attended by Glenalbyn squads this season so far. Generally, it is in the form of a link to either the Swimleinster website or the Swim Ireland website, but in a few cases, it is in pdf format where the results weren't published. Also there are a few galas where we only have the results for our own swimmers, not the full gala results.                                                                                                       results
25 March - Rosanna makes Team 2012
Congratulations to Rosanna Cooney who has qualified today for Swim Ireland's Team 2012 (geared towards identifying and nurturing potential Olympic athletes). Rosanna, still only 13, achieved this by taking the overall bronze medal in the 200m back crawl event in the Dave McCullough gala in the UL 50m pool in Limerick. Her time was an excellent 2:29 long course. Well done, Rosanna (and congratulations to her coach, Linda).
15 March 2006 - Table Quiz
Thanks to all who made the table quiz on Sunday last such a huge success. We had 30 tables participating, comprised of swimmers, coaches, parents, uncles, aunts, friends etc. Particular thanks are due to Marie Sheridan who contributed her beautiful painting "Breaking waves at Keem" for auction.  Thanks also to those who contributed raffle prizes and spot prizes, and of course the team of markers and helpers, Linda who kept score, and quizmaster, Brian.

The top prize was won by the coaches team (well, mostly) of Stephen McBride, Paula McGowan, Aoife McPhilips and Lorna Barker - but it was very close all the way. They just pipped the Robinson/Maguire team. In joint third place, one further point behind, were the best of the senior squad teams (Graham Campbell, Kate Coleman Lenehan, Philip Meagher and Mark Meighan) and one of the O'Brien family teams - including Piranha swimmer Niamh - very well done.

Apart from being a great social night, we raised approximately €1,700 for club funds. Thanks to everybody for the great support.

25 February - Leinster Championships
Well done to all of our swimmers who competed in the Leinster Championships in the NAC last weekend. there were lots of personal bests achieved, and we had many finalists. Particular congratulations to our medal-winners, who were as follows:

Rosanna Cooney - 200m backstroke (3rd)

Women's 800m Freestyle relay - Ailbhe Benson, Kate Coleman Lenehan, Meabh MacConville, Grace Sweeney (3rd)

Men's 800m Freestyle relay -  Daniel Cochrane, Philip Meagher, Richie Murray, James Phelan (3rd)

10 February - Irish Schools Championships
Congratulations to all club swimmers who competed in the highly competitive Irish Schools Championships held last weekend in the NAC. There were 217 schools represented in all, and the standard was extremely high. Pride of place went to Donal Crowe, Philip Meagher and Richie Murray who competed for Gonzaga in the fastest Irish schools relay events ever. In the Senior boys medley and freestyle finals, the fastest two teams smashed the previous Irish Schools records. Gonzaga were unlucky to come a close second to an exceptional team from Royal Belfast Academical institute (RBAI) - they have the consolation of becoming Leinster Schools record-holders.

In the Junior girls Freestyle relay final, Niamh Duggan, Meabh MacConville and Ciara Murray took silver medals, representing Muckross Park.

Well done to the 17 members of the Senior squad who swam in the Exeter long-course gala at the weekend. Well done to Stephen McBride who pipped Owen Campbell (home for the Christmas break from Loughborough College, where he is a member of the prestigious Loughborough swim squad) in the special invitation 33m Fly race  - but that start definitely looked dodgy!

I'm afraid we're not able to name all 17 members of the winning relay team in the special mixed race, but it was quite a spectacle!

The full results are available here        GSC Club Gala 2005 Results

Many thanks to everybody who made the afternoon so successful, including our compere, Declan McGrath, the coaches who had the swimmers so well prepared and kept the events running smoothly, and the parents who encouraged all of the swimmers, and who carried out timekeeping and other duties.

A very special thanks to Edwin and Ruth Davison who took all of the pictures. These can be seen in the poster on the noticeboard (and will be posted on the website shortly).

There are still a number of the laminated 2006 club calendars available in the club shop for €5.

We raised a total of €1,787 - the highest amount we have ever raised for this event.
